Emma’s Story: “Eating This Way Gave Me the Control Back I Yearned For”

Health-e-Solutions comment: Emma is a wonderful, courageous young woman from Emma’s StoryEngland who has taken control of her type 1 diabetes through lifestyle changes, including eating more alkalizing foods. We hope Emma’s story will encourage you to consider changing your lifestyle to gain better control and optimal diabetes management for long term health and success. Her story has encouraged us greatly.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes, it felt as if my whole world had been turned upside down. At 13 you’re not meant to have that sort of responsibility, you’re meant to concentrate on friends and homework not injections, carb-counting and medication!

Despite trying to just listen to everyone at the hospital, I had a persistent little voice in my head that kept asking whether there was an alternative way to help at least better manage the condition.  It turns out my family was thinking the same thing. I researched diet and type 1 diabetes and cut out carbohydrates, foods that were damaging my body and just cleaned up my diet and ended up being able to come off insulin and remained off it for two and a half years. I’m currently taking a small amount of long acting insulin but I’m hoping to wean myself back off it eventually.

Eating this way gave me the control back I yearned for, I didn’t have to worry about passing out from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or going off to inject after every meal which was so freeing. I’ve also learned to really enjoy eating salads and vegetables and even if I could, I wouldn’t change the way I eat. Despite encountering challenges going down this path, facing and overcoming them has made me, as it does everyone, a stronger person. I’ve had opportunities I know I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t decided to follow this lifestyle, and I’ve discovered things I never would have if I decided to go fully down the conventional route. It’s something I’ve now learned to be grateful for.

I still go out with my friends and have a normal social life but have more energy and don’t have to worry about a hangover or spending all my money on junk food! My diet has played such an important part in helping me deal with the challenge of diabetes, and it will hopefully allow me to help others in the future. The message I’d put out to anyone struggling, especially any newly diagnosed, is that it does get easier. Changing my diet to an alkaline way of eating was definitely one of the best decisions I made and has had such a positive impact on my life and me as a person, far beyond purely my diabetes. *
