We cannot change our nature, but we can assuredly affect its expression through nurture. This is the genetics versus environment issue which lies at the center of so much regarding the prevention, treatment, and we would argue even the cure of diabetes – both type 1 and type 2 diabetes ( and all the other multi-varied forms).
Genetics used to be viewed as static, immovable, permanent. It was thought that once your genes were in place, here was nothing you could do about them. To a great extent that is true. However, the expression of your genes – whether or not they are turned on or off – CAN be changed, at least to some extent. It turns out that with diabetes, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the emerging field of epigenetics is revealing that the mutability of genetic expression is significant. That is the part of this disease that we can control to some extent. The question is to how much extent?
All researchers agree that genes and environment, nature and nurture, combine to cause the disease, whatever their disagreements over relative weights.
While the extent to which environmental factors positively impact genetic expression likely varies, depending on the number and location of SNP (single Nucleotide Polymorphisms), it is significant enough to make it a 50-50 risk even in monozygotic twins! The risk falls quite precipitously after that. We think this is quite sufficient to warrant taking a pro-active approach to controlling, eliminating and minimizing as many environmental factors as possible.
This is the premise of the diabetic-alkaline lifestyle. This is why we believe we have seen such remarkable results in our two boys with type 1 diabetes. This is why others have experienced even more remarkable results. With the likelihood of passing along genetic predisposition, we may also be living this healthier lifestyle for the benefit of our future generations as well.
Our Recipe e-Books provide alternatives to the typical high-carb, low nutrition foods that are standard fare for the typical western diet. Our Home Study Course teaches you how to implement the diabetic-alkaline lifestyle in a practical and livable way. We think it can form the foundation for a natural, way to better manage all types of diabetes. While diet is key and foundational, other environmental aspects are also important to manage: exercise, sleep, breathing, stress,
